Recreational Activities

McNicholas Recreational Activities are organized groups of students with an adult moderator created for social and recreational purposes.  Each group determines guidelines and/or bylaws that must be followed.

Anime Club
Moderator: Teresa Davis

Anime Club is for students with knowledge of and interest in all genres of anime. The club meets Tuesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 202 to share thoughts and information on anime and watch various forms of anime. The club has a president who sends communication, ensures media is appropriate and available, and keeps up with members. There is also a vice-president who is responsible to step in when president cannot be in attendance.

Ceramics Club
Moderator: Mel Gaskins

The Ceramics Club is for students who are currently enrolled in a ceramics class and those who are interested in the ceramic arts. It is designed to give students more time to experience the material. If you have not been in a ceramic studio class before we recommend taking one of the classes first to learn more about working in the ceramics studio. Space is limited and preference will be given to AP Ceramic students. We meet once a month after school from 2:45 - 4:15 in the ceramic studio. A sign in sheet will be posted for every monthly meeting two days prior to the meeting date.

Cooking Club
Moderator: Regina Goines

The Cooking Club’s goal is to learn about cooking, have fun, and meet new friends. Students must participate in at least 4 events each year in order to be considered a member of the club. The club usually has one event a month from August to April. Costs are minimal and are assessed for individual events to cover the cost of ingredients or students donate food items.

Improv Club
Moderator: John Chadwell

The club is a place for students to practice and perform improvisational comedy while learning the concepts behind it. The club usually meets weekly on Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. and attendance is expected. The club members elect a president and officers who plan and lead the club meetings and recruit new members.

Intramurals: Co-ed Volleyball & Co-ed Basketball
Moderator: Matt Wehrman

Intramural sports offer students a chance to play sports at a fun and competitive level. Volleyball is offered in the fall and basketball is offered in the winter. The teams play on Sunday evenings in the auxiliary gym. There is 6 weeks of league play and 1 week of tournament play. There is a $25 registration fee per sport.

Rocket Report
Moderator: Barb Gillming

The Rocket Report is a news show (spoof) that airs prior to major school events designed to promote school spirit. It is filmed, edited, and produced by the members of the staff. Anyone is welcome to be involved with the Rocket Report, but it is typically comprised of students who have taken or currently take the one semester course, Video Editing. Staff members should demonstrate the skill and dedication needed to plan and execute a successful episode. The group works on the report on an as needed basis and during B lunch/6th period in Room 121.

Senior Video
Moderator: Barb Gillming

This group is made up of senior student volunteers that are responsible for creating a senior video that will be given to the seniors the week of graduation. Members will video tape events to create highlights throughout the school year.

Ski Club
Moderator: Mel Gaskins

The McNicholas Ski Club creates opportunities for recreational skiing, snowboarding, and tubing by promoting lifelong winter sport participation, fun, and social interaction. The McNick Ski Club develops a ski community for all with a culture that values nature, outdoors, and lifelong fitness. Our ski community embraces volunteerism; we contribute to the Special Olympics ski community each year with their Winter Olympics.

The Ski Club supplies transportation to Perfect North every Monday that school is in session from December to the beginning of March on a first-come, first-served basis. Members who are riding the bus meet in the gym lobby at 3 p.m. and must be back on the bus at 8 p.m. to return to McNicholas. Ski Club provides an opportunity for students to purchase a Perfect North ski/tube pass at a discounted rate. There is an additional $50 fee to be in the club.
