Rockets connect in-class learning to real-world experiences

At McNicholas, we partner with professionals to give our students opportunities that build on classroom learning. In the past week alone, teachers have hosted the following interactive sessions:

  • Rockets in Ms. Schwab’s Reading Skills class and Mrs. Noble’s AP Language class met with Lynda Blackmon Lowery, author of Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom. Mrs. Lowery was the youngest person to march with John Lewis and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Selma Voting Rights March in 1965.

  • Mitchell Hartwell, Class of 2016, visited Mrs. Gillming’s AP Computer Science class to discuss his use of programming in the amusement park industry.  Mitchell, a Solutions Architect at Holovis, discussed augmented and virtual reality, installation of computer hardware within and around attractions, and writing software to give users an immersive and unique experience.

  • Students in Mrs. Brother’s Statistics class visited with Ron Tathum, former analyst and CEO of Burke industries, who discussed how knowledge of statistics can be used to make informed decisions in the marketplace.

  • Fr. Kevin Scalf, C.CP.S. visited Ms. Davis’s vocation class to break open the lived reality of ordained life to teach, govern, and sanctify.  Fr. Kevin is joining the McNicholas staff next school year as a teacher and chaplain.
