McNicholas Students Serve as American Youth Ambassadors in Jiangsu, China for Second Year

Nineteen McNicholas students recently returned from an international leadership and cultural exchange trip to Jiangsu, China, where they served as American Youth Ambassadors for the second consecutive year. Their weeklong experience provided learning beyond the classroom, strengthened global connections, and showcased the values of curiosity, compassion, and leadership that define the McNicholas community.

The student delegation included Charlotte Aber, Caleb Boss, Sean Bursk, Casey Fritsch, Zoe Grube, Caleb Link, Grace Mastruserio, Ella McConnell, Kaitlyn McConnell, Ellie Mulvaney, Ryan Moss, Jason Ng, Abigail Perry, Nicholas Phillips, Addison Russo, Tyler Sanders, Isabella Tanner, Lily Von Holle, and Annemarie Wolfer. They were accompanied by Ms. Mel Gaskins, Mr. Dan Freeman, and Mr. John Jorden.

During their visit, the ambassadors were warmly welcomed by two of McNicholas’ Sister Schools: Henglin High School and No. 3 High School of Changzhou. What began as traditional school visits quickly grew into meaningful cultural exchanges. Students participated in welcome ceremonies, shared stories of American school life, and forged friendships with their Chinese peers. They also participated in hands-on activities, including calligraphy and cultural arts, exchanging gifts, and learning about the traditions that shape daily life in the Jiangsu region.

Throughout the week, the group explored both the historic and modern dimensions of Chinese culture. Their itinerary included visits to the China Sea-Salt Museum, Jizi Cultural Center, the Yancheng Museum, and the Red-Crowned Crane Wetland Ecological Reserve. Students also experienced local cuisine, vibrant night markets, and community hubs that highlight Jiangsu’s blend of ancient heritage and rapid innovation.

These experiences offered profound lessons in global citizenship. Students learned to navigate unfamiliar environments, communicate across languages, and reflect on the shared hopes and challenges of young people worldwide. The trip encouraged independence, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of international cooperation.
