Hearts Across Hemispheres: McNicholas Families Welcome Argentina Home

Hearts Across Hemispheres: McNicholas Families Welcome Argentina Home
For five unforgettable weeks this winter, the hallways of McNicholas High School echoed with new voices, new laughter, and a new language. Our school made history by hosting our first-ever exchange students from Las Nieves High School in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In doing so, we discovered something profound. Home is not just a place. It is a feeling created by open hearts and open doors.

Ten students traveled more than 5,000 miles to experience life in Cincinnati. What they found went far beyond classrooms and cultural exchange. They found family.

More Than Guests, Family
Our McNicholas host families did not simply provide a place to stay. They welcomed students into their daily lives. Around dinner tables, Argentine recipes were shared alongside stories and laughter. Game nights stretched late into the evening. Snow days, an unforgettable novelty for students from the Southern Hemisphere, became joyful celebrations.

Often, the most meaningful moments happened quietly. Morning carpools, homework at the kitchen table, and conversations about hopes, differences, and dreams.

Living the McNicholas Experience
The students fully embraced life at McNicholas. They attended classes alongside their hosts and international ambassadors, joined a spirited school pep rally, and cheered at a Cincinnati Cyclones hockey game. For many, it was their first time seeing ice hockey. They snow-tubed at Perfect North, gathered for Friendsgiving, and experienced the depth of our Kairos retreat, where some of the strongest friendships were formed.

Words from the Heart
As the exchange concluded, chaperone Miguel Rebollar gathered the students at the airport, hoping to ease the weight of goodbye. What they shared captured the heart of the experience.

“All the students told me they will cherish forever the bonds made on this trip. They spoke about how open the McNicholas community was, how host families opened their hearts, and how meaningful the friendships, especially through Kairos, became. I cannot describe the tears of sadness and joy they shared. This experience will be marked in their hearts forever.”

From Our Families
The impact of the exchange was felt just as deeply at home:

“We loved having Licha. We were so impressed by him and by all of the students from Argentina. This experience was truly a blessing. I was hesitant at first, but it became more than I ever imagined. He is like a son to me, and part of my heart is with him now. This experience also opened a new community for our sons, Jake and Josh. As new juniors, finding a friend group can be difficult, and this exchange helped them form meaningful connections with other students.” - Mrs. DeBrosse, Host Parent

A Door Opened in Both Directions
One of the most meaningful outcomes of this exchange is what comes next. Because of the relationships formed during these five weeks, McNicholas has been invited to participate in a reciprocal exchange with Las Nieves High School in Buenos Aires. This opportunity did not exist before. The invitation reflects the trust and genuine connection that have been built among our schools, our families, and our students. When we open our doors, we open doors for our own children as well.

A Community That Chooses Welcome
This historic exchange reminded us of something essential about McNicholas. When we choose welcome, lives are changed. Students arrived as visitors and left as family, carrying Cincinnati in their hearts back to Buenos Aires and leaving pieces of their own hearts with us.

Thank you to our extraordinary host families for making this experience possible, and to Miguel and the Las Nieves community for trusting us with your students. This was not goodbye. It was hasta luego.
