Fr. Kevin Scalf shares faith and a sense of humor

Fr. Kevin Scalf shares faith and a sense of humor

Since becoming school Chaplain and Theology teacher in 2021, Fr. Kevin Scalf of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood has woven himself into the fabric of McNicholas through his wit, sense of humor and ability to make anyone he meets immediately feel valued.

Among his many responsibilities, he works with a team of dedicated colleagues to ensure for the integration and promotion of the school’s Roman Catholic identity.

Sacramentally, he presides at all school Masses, Friday morning Masses, and retreat Masses. He regularly hears Confessions and offers pastoral counseling on campus. Fr. Kevin began weekly Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel and launched an RCIA program for students interested in becoming Catholic.

In the classroom, Fr. Kevin teaches Biblical Literature, a College Credit Plus course that allows seniors to earn both high school and college credits and is spearheading the launch of a new capstone program, which empowers seniors to research, design, present, and impact a response to a current social justice issue according to the Themes of Catholic Social Teaching.

“Fr. Kevin is multi-talented,” Mr. Mueller said. “He’s a gifted teacher. He has a strong academic background, especially in Scripture. He has good gifts as a chaplain and a person who can help us appreciate the church’s liturgy and sacraments, and he has such a strong pastoral presence.”

Before coming to McNicholas, Fr. Kevin served as Director of Mission and Ministry, Assistant Professor of Theology, and Chair of the Humanities Department at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, IN. He is an alumnus of Mount St. Joseph University, Xavier University, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, and Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.
