Four artists recognized by Scholastic, including two architecture Gold Keys

Congratulations to our Rocket artists and architects who were recognized in the Regional Scholastic Art Competition.

Conner Dute ’22 and Conner Gibson ’22 were both awarded Gold Keys for their architecture work. Conner Dute was recognized for his pizza oven rendering, Rock-In Park, and Conner Gibson received his Gold Key for The Cozy Comb, a plan for sustainable living for displaced persons. Both Conners will move on the National Scholastic competition.

Maddie Favro ’22 received a Silver Key in Ceramics for her vase entitled Cherry Blossom and Peter Anderson ’23 received four Honorable Mentions for his photography: “After the Storm, Midnight Meadow, NM”; “Red Gaze”; “Rooting Mountains”; “Surreptitious.”

Maddie, Connor, and Conner’s artworks will be on display at the Art Academy of Cincinnati from Monday, Feb. 14 through Friday, Feb. 18.

Architecture and ceramics teacher Ms. Mel Gaskins said, “This is the first time McNicholas has submitted to the architecture category. We submitted two and have two winners! That’s pretty impressive!”

Conner Gibson used his design skills to create a potential solution to a real-world, social-justice-minded problem. His Cozy Comb is a sustainable homeless shelter with customizable and movable pods.

Ms. Gaskins said, “You won’t find architecture programs like ours in other high schools. We are producing students who are skilled in a variety of design fields—architecture, interior design, industrial design, product design, and visual communications. Our students are graduating from McNick and entering college having had experiences that will make a real difference in their futures and in their communities.”

Maddie and Conner Gibson both plan to study architecture in college.
