Football team sends a ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ to alum and Bengals punter Kevin Huber '04

Football team sends a ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ to alum and Bengals punter Kevin Huber '04

When Bengals punter Kevin Huber won a game as a McNicholas Rocket, he and his teammates would have gathered on the steps of the McNicholas High School convent building and counted out the score with a “Boom Chicka Boom” cheer.

This tradition was born in the 1950s when the founders of McNicholas, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, lived in the convent. Because of their religious commitment, they weren’t permitted to go to the football games, but they cared deeply about their boys and wanted hear the results of the game before it was reported in the newspaper the next morning.  So, the players would come back to the school and count out the score of the game on the steps of the convent.

To this day, after every victory, the players and coaches pray at the grotto and then race up the convent steps to count the score and chant their battle cry. They are joined by cheerleaders, students, and fans who celebrate with them.

As Huber heads to the Super Bowl, the McNicholas football team and student body cheered a “Boom Chicka Boom” in his honor.

McNicholas Alumni Director, former Rocket football player, and member of the Rocket football coaching staff, Steve Rice, said, “Kevin, we hope this 'Boom Chicka Boom' resonates all the way from Beechmont Avenue to Los Angeles. The Launch Pad and our entire community are rooting for you! Who Dey!”

Where Art Comes Alive: McNicholas Students Explore Italy, France, and Belgium

Some of life's greatest lessons cannot be found in a textbook. They are discovered standing beneath the ancient arches of the Colosseum, gazing up at masterpieces in Vatican City, or watching the sun set along the Seine River. This spring, 43 McNicholas students experienced those moments firsthand, returning home with a deeper appreciation for art, history, culture, and the world around them.

A Friendship Without Borders: McNicholas Celebrates Its First Sister School Exchange with Argentina

Nine McNicholas students traveled to Buenos Aires this summer for the school's first Sister School Exchange with Instituto Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves, building on friendships formed when Argentine students visited McNicholas earlier this year. Through living with host families, attending classes, and experiencing Argentina's rich culture and history, students discovered that the most meaningful lessons come from stepping beyond their comfort zones and embracing connections that transcend borders.
