Guest speaker Sarah Hayes, McNicholas Class of 2011, was excited to “return home” to her alma mater and “interact with the next generation of science enthusiasts.”  Sarah graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in environmental engineering where she “fell in love with water.” Sarah is currently applying her passion for public service and care for the environment to drinking water treatment projects and water distribution system modeling.

Sarah’s message resonated with the inductees who read What the Eyes Don't See by Mona Hannah-Attisha as part of a school wide-read this summer. What the Eyes Don't See is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona stood up for the children of Flint, Michigan in the midst of the devastating water crisis.

Sarah shared stories and wisdom from her life as a scientist, concluding with this advice: “In today's world that is fraught with division and the loss of common ground, we have to actively approach our schooling, our jobs, our lives with the mentality that no person at their heart is better or worse than another. We are all just people, and I personally believe that most people have a good heart and do their best every day. Each of us must remember our common worth as human beings and to infuse our lives with the idea.”

McNicholas High School inductees to Science National Honor Society

The purpose of the Science National Honor Society is to encourage participation in and recognition of scientific and intellectual thought, to advance the students’ knowledge of classical and modern science, to communicate with the scientific community, to aid the civic community with its comprehension of science, and to encourage students to participate in community service and, in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits mankind.

Inductees must have a non-weighted GPA of 87% and a non-weighted average in science courses of 92%; have taken or are taking four years of science including biology, chemistry, physics, and at least one AP science course; have pursued science outside the classroom; and maintain academic integrity in all subject areas.
