Students’ brilliance on display at Taft Museum of Art

The work of five McNicholas visual communications students is on display at the annual Artists Reaching Classrooms (ARC) Exhibition. You can see the artwork of seniors Amanda Braig and Grace Elpers and juniors Noel Shelly, Devon Coleman, and Kennedy Dehner at The Taft Museum of Art through March 30.

Noel Shelly received the Notable Wonder Award for his piece.

"The ARC Program has been a true blessing for my students,” visual communications teacher, Mrs. Sarah Nestheide said.

The Taft Museum’s ARC Program immerses high school art students in Cincinnati’s visual arts community, exposing them to careers in the arts through studio visits and other field trips. This year, the class visited Bang Zoom Design and the Taft Museum of Art. 

“The program has provided them with a unique opportunity to connect with various influential artists as well as with the Taft Museum of Art, explore local art opportunities, and establish meaningful relationships and connections with all of them," Mrs. Nestheide said.

For exhibit submissions, students were prompted to create art in any medium that commented on the works and artists that they had connected with throughout the year.  

“I'm honored to have witnessed my students grow and flourish, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for them," Mrs. Nestheide added.

    Some of life's greatest lessons cannot be found in a textbook. They are discovered standing beneath the ancient arches of the Colosseum, gazing up at masterpieces in Vatican City, or watching the sun set along the Seine River. This spring, 43 McNicholas students experienced those moments firsthand, returning home with a deeper appreciation for art, history, culture, and the world around them.

    Nine McNicholas students traveled to Buenos Aires this summer for the school's first Sister School Exchange with Instituto Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves, building on friendships formed when Argentine students visited McNicholas earlier this year. Through living with host families, attending classes, and experiencing Argentina's rich culture and history, students discovered that the most meaningful lessons come from stepping beyond their comfort zones and embracing connections that transcend borders.
