The McNicholas High School's flexible schedule system allows advisory groups to meet each week. The group of 12 students and one consistent advisor is small enough so that the members get to know, support, and grow in empathy for each other and for people outside the group.
In September, students learned the basic steps of the Daily Examen. Advisors talked to students about why it is important to make time for quiet, prayerful reflection and to consciously choose gratitude even in the midst of the busyness of life. Advisors also encouraged students to consider the positive impacts of incorporating the examen into their daily lives and informed them that a version of the meditative examen will be integrated into most Advisory gatherings this year.
During Advisory gatherings in October, students, guided by praying the Examen, will select the one academic goal area most important for their growth during the first semester and will put the goal in SMART form.
In November, students were reminded of the importance of choosing joy and gratitude, guided by A Daily Examen for Gratitude.
