Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does the test last?
A: The test should take approximately 2 ½ hours to complete.
Q: How can I prepare for the test?
A: Test preparation occurs on a daily basis through the normal eighth grade curriculum, by practicing mental math skills, and by reading above grade level. However, some students are interested in further preparation for the HSPT. To become familiar with the types of questions found on the HSPT, you can Preview the Test.
Q: Does McNicholas High School offer HSPT Prep Classes?
A: McNicholas High School collaborates with Crescendo Cincinnati to offer HSPT Prep Classes. To register for one of these classes, please visit http://www.crescendotestprep.org/.
Q: How do I request test accommodations?
A: Contact your grade school intervention specialist and/or principal for the request form. Your grade school principal must submit the request, along with current documentation (IEP, ISP, 504, etc.) no later than November 3, 2017. Please note that the student must have a current, formalized IEP, ISP or 504 outlining the needed accommodation for approval. No exceptions.
Q: Does it matter where I take the HSPT?
A: No. One of the reasons we give a standard test for all Archdiocesan schools is so that students only need to take one test. No preferential treatment will be given to students based on where they take their test by any school. This is a requirement of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
Q: How do I select which schools to receive my score?
A: On the morning of the exam, students will be provided with a sheet where they can select which schools they want to receive their scores. As part of the $30 registration fee, you have the option of sending scores to three schools of your choice.
Q: Will my acceptance to and/or placement at McNicholas High School be based solely on the test scores?
A: No. We take into consideration your test scores, along with your application and grade school records. Even after these recommendations are made, parents and students also have a voice in final class placement decisions.
