SAVE Students Act
As part of House Bill 123, enacted by Ohio’s 133rd General Assembly, Ohio law requires the board of education of each city, exempted village, and local school district and the board of each cooperative education school districts, along with chartered nonpublic schools, to provide health education instruction in suicide prevention, violence prevention and social inclusion. This legislation is now known as the Safety and Violence Education (SAVE) Students Act.
(A) As used in this section and section 3313.60 of the Revised Code, "evidence-based" means a program or practice that does either of the following: (1) Demonstrates a rationale based on high-quality research findings or positive evaluation that such a program or practice is likely to improve relevant outcomes and includes ongoing efforts to examine the effects of the program or practice; codes.ohio.gov |
Student Instruction. Ohio law requires schools to provide instruction in suicide prevention, violence prevention, and social inclusion.The law requires: Students in grades 6 through 12 to receive at least one hour or one standard class period per school year of evidence-based instruction in suicide awareness and prevention; education.ohio.gov |
This law requires school districts to provide:
- 1 hour of training in Social Inclusion using an evidence based program for every student in grades 6-12 every year

1 hour of training in Safety Training and Violence Prevention using an evidence-based program for every student in grades 6-12 every year

1 hour of training in Suicide Awareness and Prevention using an evidence based program for every student in grades 6-12 every year
Schools are required to use an approved, evidence-based program to meet these requirements. Instruction is to occur annually for students in grades 6 through 12. If health education is not offered annually for each grade, the instruction may be provided in another subject. By written request of the student's parent or guardian, a student shall be excused from taking instruction in these topics. If you would like your student to opt out, complete the form here. Mental Health Awareness
At McNicholas High School, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
We encourage students, parents, and staff to speak openly about mental health, seek support when needed, and look out for one another. Whether you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to, you are not alone.
Support is available. Our school counselors and mental health and wellness therapist are here to listen and help. We also offer resources and safe spaces where students can recharge and build resilience. If a person needs immediate assistance:
