In 1981, the first group of McNicholas students traveled to the Glenmary Farm in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky for a six day service-learning retreat. Each year since, McNicholas students continue to be immersed into Glenmary’s domestic mission to serve the rural poor through the leadership of the organization’s volunteer farm managers. The trip was so popular in the fall that McNicholas added a spring trip three years ago. In June, several faculty and staff returned to the mountains of Joppa, Tennessee, to assist with summer camps.
Members of the Class of 2019 and several faculty members visited Joppa September 11-16. The students worked to build community both among themselves and among the people of eastern Tennessee through service, shared prayer, and cultural immersion experiences.
Senior Vinny Ramundo was part of this trip and shared how the trip opened his eyes and impacted him. Click on the headlines below to read his first-person account.
