McNicholas High School AP Biology students were among the local high school students at The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences live surgery observation on Tues., Sept. 27. Students had the opportunity to observe the surgical team perform a heart valve replacement and interact with those in the operating room through a moderator during the procedure.
“I really enjoyed being able to watch the process of how a surgery works and the quick decisions and precise skills that a surgeon has to have in the operating room,” senior Allyssa Leaton said. “It was really cool to watch everything happen up close and through a camera and to see the heart beating right there in front of my eyes.”
Leaton plans to pursue medicine in college next year, but felt that the experience reinforced her decision. “I was already planning on taking a pre-med track in college and this excited me to learn more about how everything works and to possibly be in the doctor's shoes one day,” Leaton said.
Students who observed the surgery were (left to right top row), Jacob Fries, Jared Taylor, Allyssa Leaton, Ben Wainscott, Sean Kapp, (left to right front row) Carly Cullion, Kelly Easley, Gracie Blades, Lauren Riede, and Miranda Roesel.
