McNicholas High School celebrated Teen Read Week October 8-12. This year's theme of Teen Read Week was It's Written in the Stars. Teen Read Week was created by the Young Adult Library Services Association in 1998 to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users. Rockets marked the week in several ways:
- Enjoying literary trivia contests on announcements each morning.
- Participating in daily crafts and activities in the library.
- Decorating a pumpkin as a protagonist, antagonist, or author from a favorite author for the Hollywood Star of Fame pumpkin display in the library.
- Welcoming faculty and staff guest readers to English classes on Friday. Guest readers brought a favorite book to share and read aloud to the classes. Not only did they share their favorite books and passages, but they also talked about why they loved these books and what reading meant to them. Selections included classic children's books like The Giving Tree, Oh, The Places You'll Go, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever to popular choices like The Book Thief, Flags of Our Fathers, and Born to Run.
