McNicholas High School celebrated its 25th Hall of Fame ceremony on Thurs., Feb. 23, by inducting two outstanding Rocket athletes.
At McNicholas High School, Christina Gilene ’09 was an all-city volleyball player her junior and senior years and all-state her senior year. She was the team captain her senior year when McNicholas won the GCL championship. The team won the district championship in three of her four seasons. Gilene is the McNicholas career leader in digs and in games played. At Wittenburg University, Gilene was a four-year starter and captain her junior and senior years. The Tigers were conference champions all four years that Christina played. She was a two-time North Coast Conference player, two-time all-region, and two-time NCAA All-American. In her senior year, Gilene was Wittenburg University’s Female Athlete of the Year.
In his senior year at McNicholas, Gordon Massa ’85 was a first team all-city, all-metro, all-southwest Ohio, and all-state player for the Rocket football team who finished the regular season 9-1 that year and lost in the state championship game to Elyria Catholic. Massa went on to the University of Dayton where he played football all four years and was a member of the 1987 national runner-up team. He was a co-captain his senior year and named first team all-American by the Sports Information Directors and the Football Gazette. He coached at the University of Dayton for the next four years during which time the team was 47-3-1 and national champions in 1989.
The evening also included a feature presentation by Jeff Berding, General Manager of the FC Cincinnati USL soccer club. Members of the McNicholas Hall of Fame from throughout the past 25 years also joined the evening’s festivities.
