Rockets impact community with tutoring outreach program

More than 40 McNicholas students are skipping study hall for a good reason: They’re tutoring kids at Sands Montessori, Mt. Washington Elementary, and St. Joseph Catholic School.

Through a program launched in the 2021-22 school year, our students provide reading enrichment at Sands, math and language arts support at Mt. Washington, and homework assistance at St. Joe’s.

“Their commitment to the program and to the kids is impressive,” said Amanda Beatty, Theology Teacher and Community. Engagement Coordinator. “Our students are busy and involved in a lot of activities, but they always made time for their kids. Many give up their study halls; others go after school. And those who do not have driver’s licenses even volunteer to walk. It is that important to them.”

McNicholas students have made an impact on over 150 kids and counting — the same kids they run into at the grocery store or pizza place — making the outreach program a example of compassionate leadership and community engagement in action.
