Rockets Discover Art, Architecture, and Culture Across Europe

Rockets Discover Art, Architecture, and Culture Across Europe

In June, 45 McNicholas students set off on a 15-day international journey that brought textbooks to life and turned the world into their classroom. The Art & Architecture European Carousel ‘25 swept students through 10 cities across Europe, offering an unforgettable exploration of art, history, science, and culture.

Led by McNicholas faculty Ms. Mel Gaskins (Art & Architecture), Mr. Shawn Young (History), and Mr. Jon Spurlock (Science), the itinerary was carefully designed to blend academic depth with cultural immersion. From the serene waters of Lake Lucerne to the vibrant streets of Barcelona, students traced the legacy of human creativity and ingenuity across borders, time periods, and disciplines.

“I had the amazing opportunity to take 45 students and adults on a once-in-a-lifetime journey. We crossed borders and bridged cultures to connect the dots between art, history, and architecture," said Ms. Mel Gaskins. "From the moment they stepped off the plane, our students opened their eyes, their hearts, and their worlds. Watching them grow more confident, curious, and connected each day was the most beautiful part. I couldn’t be more proud—they traveled with Rocket pride, kindness, and a true love of learning.”

The European Carousel wasn’t simply a sightseeing tour—it was a deeply enriching experience that gave students a direct connection to the global influences they study in school. From marveling at the stained-glass grandeur of Gothic cathedrals, to standing in awe before works of Van Gogh and Michelangelo, or walking the same streets once tread by philosophers and revolutionaries, students experienced Europe as thoughtful learners and emerging global citizens.

The trip included highlights such as:

  • Touring iconic museums and landmarks in Paris, Rome, and Florence
  • Exploring Roman ruins and medieval castles
  • Experiencing local traditions and cuisines in small towns and bustling cities
  • Swimming in Lake Lucerne and hiking through Alpine landscapes
  • Engaging in cross-curricular reflection led by their McNicholas teachers

Throughout their journey, students grew in understanding of not only the world around them, but also of themselves and each other. They developed independence, perspective, and lifelong memories.

McNicholas High School continues to champion these global enrichment opportunities, recognizing that travel has the power to transform students into active, compassionate citizens of the world.

Future opportunities are already in motion. Upcoming Art & Architecture trips include:

  • Summer 2026: Art of Italy and France
  • Summer 2027: Exploring South Korea and Japan

Hearts Across Hemispheres: McNicholas Families Welcome Argentina Home

For five unforgettable weeks this winter, the hallways of McNicholas High School echoed with new voices, new laughter, and a new language. Our school made history by hosting our first-ever exchange students from Las Nieves High School in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In doing so, we discovered something profound. Home is not just a place. It is a feeling created by open hearts and open doors.
