ARCHBISHOP MCNICHOLAS COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

The Community Service Program at Archbishop McNicholas High School is designed to challenge our students to "attain full stature in Christ," by living the gospel values found in Matthew 25, the "Works of Mercy." Archbishop John Timothy McNicholas himself had a special place in his heart for service to those in need as did our school’s founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. We have a long-standing tradition of volunteering and working for change in the community. As a result, each student is required to do at least 40 hrs. of community service while attending Archbishop McNicholas High School. The format is as follows:

Underclassmen Service:

Before the beginning of 4th qtr. of the sophomore year a student is required to do at least 20 hrs. of service. This service can be any combination of school, parish or underprivileged volunteer work. During the 4th qtr. of the sophomore year they are required to write a paper and / or give a short presentation on the service they performed. This will be done for a grade in their Religion class.

Upperclassmen Service:

Before the end of the 1st qtr. in Social Justice class (Religion), during their senior year, a student is required to do at least 20 additional hrs. of service. This entire service work has to be at one place, with an agency who serves the underprivileged. You may carry over any hours over 20 from your freshman or sophomore year but again, this must all be working with the underprivileged. During a student’s Social Justice class they will give a presentation on their service experience. This presentation will be a significant grade in that class.

Graduation Requirements:

All seniors must have their service paperwork validating that they completed at least 40 hrs. of service turned into the Community Service Coordinator on or before May 1 to receive a diploma at the graduation ceremony.

The Century Club:

All students who complete 100 hrs. or more of community service, working with an agency serving the underprivileged, will be honored with a certificate of membership into the Century Club.

The Service Club:

The Service Club is one of the largest and most involved extracurricular organizations at Archbishop McNicholas High School. It is open to anyone. It plans and implements the numerous school-wide service programs throughout the school year.
