The Community Service Program at Archbishop McNicholas High School is a “service learning” program designed to challenge our students to “attain full stature in Christ” by building the gospel value of service to the “least of these.” All students are required to complete at least 40 hrs. of community service in order to graduate. At least 20 hrs. has to be done through an agency that serves those in need. All service should be done through an agency so that there is accountability. Service can be done through school, parish or an agency that serves those in need. Most students do the vast majority of their service with the underprivileged and go beyond the 40 hr. minimum requirement. The “Century Club” has been established to honor those who do over 100 hrs. of service during their time at McNicholas High School.

REQUIREMENTS:

The program at McNicholas is a “Service Learning” experience because it is tied to the curriculum. Throughout their years a student will have opportunities to share about their experiences in various classes. At two points, sophomore and senior year, they will be asked to share in a formal, more structured way in their Religion class.
Underclassmen Service:

Before the beginning of the 4th quarter of the sophomore year a student is required to do at least 20 hrs. of service. At this time the student will be required to write a quarter writing assignment in their Religion class discussing the service that they performed. The quarter writing assignment is a significant grade.
Upperclassmen Service:

Before the end of the 1st quarter of their senior year, the student is required to complete at least an additional 20 hrs. of service. At this time, in their Religion class (Social Justice), they will give a major presentation about the service they performed.

Graduation Requirements:
All seniors must have their service paperwork validated and turned in to the Community Service Coordinator by May 1. On this paperwork it must show that the student has completed at least 40 hrs. of service, with at least 20 hrs. working with those in need. The student will not receive their diploma or transcripts until this paperwork is completed and turned in.
