Purpose
The purpose of the Science National Honor Society is to encourage participation in and recognition of scientific and intellectual thought, to advance the students’ knowledge of classical and modern science, to communicate with the scientific community, to aid the civic community with its comprehension of science, and to encourage student to participate in community service, and in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind.
Requirements
Students must be seniors.
Students must have a non weighted GPA of 87.
Students must have a 92% non weighted average in science courses taken freshman, sophomore and junior years and must maintain that average during their senior year.
Students must take at least 4 years of science, including biology, chemistry and physics, and at least one AP science course.
Students must have pursued science outside the classroom in some way. For example, taking a science fair project beyond a local level, extensive volunteer work in a health or science related field, share science with others, etc.
Students must maintain the above requirements to continue as a member of the Science National Honor Society.
Once in the SNHS students must continue to provide science related service to the community.
Application Process
Students must get an application from either their science teacher or the Science NHS moderator in early September of their senior year.
Students must submit the application to the moderator.
Applications are reviewed; students are admitted on the basis of the above criteria.
Induction ceremony is held in late September.
