Journey to Justice Retreat
McNicholas High School faculty members Stephanie Morris, Lauren
Wulker, Jeff Hutchinson-Smyth accompanied students to Wheeling, West
Virginia for the 6th annual Journey to Justice Retreat. The group
departed Friday, March 5th and returned on March 8th. The following
seniors attended the retreat; Lori Bosse, Emily Bradley, Hannah
Christmann, Emily Feck, Anne Kunkler, Chris Luehrmann, Erin
Morrisroe, Morgan Rice, and Katherine Wiesenhahn.
McNicholas students joined with students from 16 other Catholic high
schools and 18
Catholic colleges and universities for the Ignatian Solidarity
Network’s Spring Teach-In on Sustainability and Environmental
Justice. Students stayed at the Wheeling Jesuit University
dormitories for three and half days, leaving their cell phones
behind, and digging deeper into their commitment as Christians to
live faithfully.
The group gathered with three hundred people for service, learning,
worship, and reflection upon our church’s call to stewardship of
God’s creation. Featured speakers included Dan Misleh, the
executive director of the Catholic Coalition for Climate Change, a
working group launched in 2006 to help the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops and the broader American Catholic community to
pursue justice and sustainability as stewards of the environment.
The weekend also involved direct action in the Wheeling community
that helped students to develop the skills to bring their learning
and carry the work home to Cincinnati and to McNicholas upon return.
“Birds of Prey” Program
On Wednesday, March 10, the McNicholas Ecology Club sponsored a
“Birds of Prey”
program presented by the Hamilton County Park District. Julie
Stubbs, an outreach naturalist, gave student and faculty
participants an up close and personal view of a Black Vulture, a
Great Horned Owl, and a Red-tailed Hawk. The presentation was both
informative and fun. The setting at McNicholas’ Paradise Gardens was
a perfect venue on a beautiful spring-like afternoon.
TechOlympics Expo
"There is no better way to engage a young person these days than to
meet them where their passions are and take them to the next level
of sophistication. TechOlympics Expo was designed to do exactly
that." said Doug Arthur, Executive Director of the INTERalliance and
member of the business development team for Atos Origin.
Eleven McNicholas High School students (Alex Stern, Brad Arvin,
Clare Grall, Jack Ehemann, Jake Belt, Jordan Bossman, Matt Heskamp,
Patrick Rehl, Quinn Gordan, Scott Grimsley, and Sterling Shaw) took
part in the 2010 TechOlympics Expo at the Millennium Hotel in
downtown Cincinnati this past weekend. These students competed in
events ranging from Wii Bowling, Madden Football, and Numbskull to
Techno Cornhole and a Wiki Race. Our students found this experience
to be very fun while they learned a lot. "It was very worthwhile."
said sophomore Patrick Rehl.
Congratulations to Matt Heskamp for bringing home a gold medal for
Disaster Recovery and the bronze medal in Wii Tennis, Patrick Rehl
for ranking 4th out of 61 competitors in Smash Brothers, Jordan
Bossman domimating in Speed Typing, and Jake Belt and Sterling Shaw
for making it to the finals beating out over 100 competitors in
Guitar Hero. Congratulations also go to our Journalism Department
for winning the bronze medal in two categories: the classic style
newspaper and the 2009 yearbook.
According to Jim Scott, Chief Technology Officer for the Kroger Co.,
"The goal of the TechOlympics Expo was quite simply to get regional
high school students jazzed about high tech jobs in the Greater
Cincinnati region and the career pathways that can lead them to
these careers." Lead delegate and coach, Jordan Bossman, was very
excited to talk to representatives from Microsoft and is currently
researching about a summer internship program with P&G.
Students Assist in
Homiletics Study
Mt. St. Mary Seminary and homiletics professor, Deacon Dave Shea (IHM)
were awarded a grant for an “Unmet Needs Assessment of Preaching
from a Teenager’s Point of View.” Deacon Dave has enlisted the help
of McNicholas High School in this endeavor. He and Marianne Griffin
from StrataMark Dynamic Solutions met with two groups of our
students with the objective of identifying key homily attributes for
a survey instrument, asking such questions as “what do you like most
in the Sunday homily? What do you dislike in the Sunday homily? What
is missing in the Sunday homily? What is most important in the
Sunday homily?”
Deacon Dave says “the sessions have been rich, lively, particular,
and inspiring—the teens have strong and clear convictions about
Catholic preaching. It is has been a great experience to be involved
in those discussions.” Thank you to juniors Gretchen Weber, Emily
England, Lucy Frey, and Anna Bloemer as well as seniors DJ
Delvecchio, Lauren Bridges, JT Weir, Chris Luehrmann, Kody
McLaughlin, Marie Paquette, Chelsea Ritter, and Shannon Coffey for
representing McNick well in these discussions. The next step will be
for McNicholas’ Campus Minister Sarah Dodds to assist as a “key
project staff” as the survey is developed and then about 200 of our
students will take an online survey. Deacon Dave’s hope is that in
this study he will learn how to better prepare seminarians as they
learn to write and preach homilies that speak to and challenge all
members of their future congregations, including young people.
Crepes Breakfast Raises Money for Haitian Earthquake Relief
McNicholas High School French National Honor Society members
organized a crepes breakfast before school as a fundraiser for
Haiti. For two dollars, students could buy a homemade crepe with
fruit and chocolate toppings. Crepes for a Cause earned $248, and
the money was given to Catholic Relief Services to assist earthquake
recovery in Haiti. French NHS members are Alex Nyktas, Katie Streit,
Catherine Paquette, Audrey Trauth, Chelsea Ritter, Jeff Schnirring,
and Puddy Wilch. French IV students Jon Flatt and Peter English
also helped with the breakfast.
Students Take Initiative on Drug / Alcohol Education
In early March, thirty McNicholas students convened with Turpin and
Anderson High
School students to discuss how best to handle drug and alcohol
education at the Anderson Township Youth Leadership Summit. The
students were broken up into small groups and given a body of people
to present to, including parents, law enforcement, school
administrators, coaches and business owners. The goal was to have
students share their perspectives on how those bodies of people
could better help high school students avoid the dangers of drugs
and alcohol. Congratulations to the McNicholas students who
represented their school well by taking initiative and conducting
all seven group presentations.
McNicholas High School

McNicholas High School
Science Fair
Congratulations to the Biology students who will be participating in
the Archbishop McNicholas science fair. The science fair will be
Wednesday January 27 after school in the science labs. All Biology
students have completed a science fair project; the finest were
invited to participate in our local fair. Students who do well can
move on to the district fair at UC in March and even the State Fair,
which is held at Ohio State University in May. A brief awards
ceremony in the McNicholas Library at 6 pm on January 27 will wrap
up the afternoon. Parents of the students who are entered in the
fair are invited and encouraged to attend this short ceremony.
AP Biology students will be helping with the organization of the
fair, and Science National Honor Society students will be serving as
judges. The science fair is the culmination of a lot of hard work by
the biology students and their teachers. The science fair project is
an opportunity for students to experience and practice true science:
find the answer to a real question by designing and executing an
experiment of the student’s own design.
In order to prepare for the science fair, students have had the
opportunity to practice their presentation for a panel of teachers
and senior Science National Honor Society Students. The panel
presentations are helpful for science fair entrants because it gives
them a chance to get feedback on their oral presentation, data
analysis, and display board. We have found that this opportunity for
practice in a setting where no one is evaluating the project has
helped enormously in preparing the students for the science fair. We
are grateful to the Science National Honor Society students for
helping serve the science department by sitting on the panels with 2
adults from the department. The presence of a student on the panel
makes the whole experience less intimidating for the freshmen and
sophomores who are presenting and it provides a great experience for
the seniors.
The SNHS students will be helping out in two other ways in the next
few weeks. They will all serve as judges at our local fair. Each
project will be judged by a team of judges; most often the team will
be a SNHS student along with an adult professional scientist. Teams
of judges are used at the district and state fairs as well. Our
seniors will also be judging at several of the local middle school
science fairs. Middle school teachers who would like to take
advantage of SNHS students as science fair judges should contact
Regina Goines, department chair.
PROJECT PARADISE

Groundbreaking for Project Paradise, an all-purpose field and
running track, took place on January 13, 2010.
Project Paradise has been undertaken by individuals who are devoted
to the goal of providing McNicholas with an all-purpose stadium of
its own. Phase I of the project includes expanding the field area to
accommodate spectator stands that will come in subsequent phases and
the installation of an artificial turf playing surface, donated by
Penn Station, Inc. & Jeff Osterfeld class of 1978. The phase also
includes creation of an asphalt eight-lane running track surrounding
the field, donated by Denver Stanfield and Wellington Orthopaedic &
Sports Medicine. Construction began on November 23, 2009 and Phase I
is expected to be completed by May 10, 2010.
For subsequent phases, the Project Paradise committee will seek as
potential donors those individuals and organizations who share their
passion for providing McNicholas with excellent athletic facilities.
Archbishop McNicholas High School is very grateful to the donors who
have enabled this initial phase, knowing that their generosity
serves as an inspiration to others, and enabling future plans for a
complete stadium facility to come to fruition.

The next phase of Project Paradise includes the installation of a
synthetic surface on the running track and sufficient seating to
accommodate daytime varsity football games. Additional phases
include a plaza, more parking, pressbox, and enhanced restrooms,
concession facilities, and lighting.
For further information please contact Chandra Davidson at (513)
231-3500 ext. 5804.
Service Club Food Collection
The McNicholas 2009 Thanksgiving Food Collection was
a huge success. Students brought canned goods in the week before
Thanksgiving in a school-wide competition. Faculty, staff, students,
alumni and Bingo attendees also participated by bringing
items in, which truly made the collection a community-wide effort.
The collection culminated on Friday with a “Jean’s Day” Pass for
students and staff who donated at least 2 canned goods. The
following week, the McNicholas Service Club delivered 7 carloads of
food to Hope Emergency and the YWCA Emergency Assistance Program.
The senior class won the competition and as part of an incentive
program faculty member and varsity men’s basketball coach, Mr.
Monahan, was taped to the wall outside of the cafeteria during
lunch. Service Club moderator, Sam Roflow said “the collection was a
lot of fun and we were able to help many families in need in our
region”.
The upcoming Service Club project is the 9th annual “Christmas Gifts
for Kids” program which begins in early December. Rolflow said,
“Every year we collect money, purchase gifts and deliver them to
inner city children at Millvale Community Center. We usually supply
gifts for about 200 children. One of the really fun parts of this
project is to visit the kids for a couple hours and just have fun
with them.” If any parent or alum would like to contribute in any
way, please feel free to contact Sam Roflow at sroflow@mcnhs.org.

Many students who were part of the McNicholas High School AP program
have recently been recognized by CollegeBoard for their performance
on the AP exams. 18 students received the distinction of "AP
Scholar" by earning a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP
exams. Katherine Hennekes, Brett Straka, and AJ Veleta received the
distinction of "AP Scholar with Honor" by earning an average score
of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or
more of these exams. Daniel Rasfeld received the distinction of "AP
Scholar with Distinction" for earning an average grade of 3.5 or
higher on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or more on five or more
of these exams.

McNicholas Service Club
Project
The McNicholas high school Service Club will partake in “The Student
Philanthropy Project” (www.studentphilanthropy.org) with several
other area high schools (10 – 12). This is a hands-on, student
centered program designed to help young people learn how to become
effective and inspired philanthropists. All participating schools
will receive $1000 to donate to a specific local non-profit service
agency. Junior and Senior Service Club members will research various
local charitable agencies. After research they will narrow the
number of agencies, interview the directors or administrators and
possibly make site visits. At the end of this process, after much
study, reflection and discussion, the students will donate their
allotted money to the agency in which they choose. McNicholas is
very excited to make this student centered project a part of the
many outreach projects that we do as a Service Club.
Two McNicholas Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists
Today officials of
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of
approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 55th annual
National Merit Scholarship Program. Among these students were
Kathleen Hiltz and Robert Kuhlman of McNicholas High School. These
academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to
continue in the completion for some 8,200 National Merit
Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next
spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award,
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the
Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of Semifinalists
are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of
the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
McNicholas Attends the Anthony
Munoz
Youth Leadership Seminar
This is a one-day event that brings youth leaders together from over
100 area schools to re-enforce the importance of strong leadership
within our schools and communities and reward those students who are
recognized as leaders within their schools and communities. Twelve
McNicholas students will be going to Xavier University on October 8
to take part. The event is presented by the Anthony Munoz Foundation
and sponsored by many area businesses. Mr. Munoz addresses the
attendees on a variety of subjects, as do other former and current
professional athletes, leaders from community, business, and
military sectors, and local and national celebrities. The
Master-of-Ceremonies is Harvey Alston, a man who spoke to our
student body in the spring of 2009. The day is a celebration of the
students and the great things that they are already contributing to
their schools and communities. The mood is very positive and the
students are truly given great respect for their work. The twelve
students who will represent McNicholas have been nominated and
chosen by the faculty and staff of the school and they represent
various aspects of student life - academics, athletes, the arts,
student government, and stewardship. The students that will be
attending from McNicholas are:
SENIORS - Lori Bosse, Maggie Daly, Lucas Custer, and Brian Frenzel
JUNIORS - Anna Bloemer, Sarah Hayes, Jack Dooling, and Billy
Losekamp
SOPHOMORES - Rebecca Heise, Rachel Wadell, Max Harmon, and John
Sandmann
