our school’s year-long focus on taking care of our earth.
Activities for students throughout the week include a Book Swap,

event off campus this year and to showcase our students’ literary
and musical talents during a Book Fair at Barnes & Noble Booksellers
in Kenwood. Students’ artwork will also be displayed throughout the
bookstore.
We invite you to
join us for this special evening. A percentage of the purchases you
make during the Book Fair will be donated to McNicholas High
School. (This includes purchases at the café!) Please click
here to print off a voucher to present at the
register. Only purchases made with the voucher will benefit

Archbishop McNicholas High School held
its 12th Annual McNick at Night on Saturday, April
5, 2008. For the first time in several years, the event was back on
the McNicholas campus. McNick at Night, the largest
fundraising event of the year, raises proceeds that are used for
scholarships for current and future Rockets, as well as to help
cover the general operating expenses of the school. Thanks to the
generosity of many alumni, parents, and friends of McNicholas, the
evening was a huge success raising over $80,000.
The event also marked the kick off of
a new fundraising initiative, Brown Bag It for the Building!
This program is designed to raise funds needed to pay-off the
remaining balance of the new gym and other renovations, and for the
creation of an endowment at McNicholas. Brown Bag it for the
Building! is a wide-based, small commitment from members of the
McNicholas community to promote the idea that if you brown bag your
lunch to work or school one day a week, and contribute the $5 or $10
that you would have spent on that lunch, you will have
single-handedly helped to secure the financial future and growth of
McNicholas High School.
“For the past six years, McNicholas
has undergone a facelift with a new front entrance, new courtyard,
renovated media center and music room, and a new gym. All of these
were part of the TurningPoint Campaign that has helped enhance the
experience for each student at McNicholas High School. This
initiative will help us as we continue on our quest to being the
parochial school of choice in Greater Cincinnati,” said Brian
Pendergest, principal of McNicholas.
For more information on you can
participate in Brown Bag It for the Building! contact the
Institutional Advancement Office at 513-231-3500 ext. 5814.

“WE RALLIED AS A COMMUNITY”
Dear Guardian Angels and McNicholas
Community,
Wow! We all came together and made it
a success. There aren’t enough thank-yous to let everyone know how
much the Rouse family has appreciated your support these last few
months. Karen is getting stronger each day. Thank you for all the
prayers and words of encouragement as Karen continues her road to
recovery.
When we had the Mio’s fundraiser I
knew there would be involvement from G.A. and McNick for its
success. Guess What? You gave more than I ever imagined.
I am happy to say the Mio’s fundraiser
generated $2635 and the tip jar sitting out at Mio’s the night of
the event (plus “extra money” GA classes donated) generated
$1212.50.
To everyone who volunteered their time
to sell 50/50 tickets and raffle tickets and to those who purchased
them I also want to thank you. The winner of the split the pot was
Jen Dempsey (cousin of Josh and Jessica Dempsey). She won $4250. We
were able to give the Rouse family $7000 from the tickets sales.
All I can say is I am very proud to
have been a part of both schools as my children grew up.
Thanks so much,
Vicky Giesting

Two Join Earthwatch Institute’s
Student Challenge Awards Program
March 14, 2008
Archbishop
McNicholas High School students Cat Humphries and Amanda Brown were
two of 86 high school students from 31 states that were selected
from a pool of over 300 applicants to join this summer’s Student
Challenge Awards Program through the Earthwatch Institute.
Cat will spend
two weeks starting June 14, 2008, in Cape Charles, Virginia, to
study “Is Sea Level Rising?” On June 16, 2008, Amanda will begin
two weeks of research in Challis, Idaho, to study “Bison.” They
will be performing science research in teams of eight students their
age, and will be getting a hands-on experience by using actual
technological equipment that is used by scientists for this
research. “I am very interested in anthropology, so I am really
excited to be able to gain more insight into the research that is
performed,” said Amanda. “I love ecology and biology. This is a
great opportunity to find out what really interests me, and will
help me in making decisions for my future,” Cat said.
The Student Challenge Awards Program
has broad personal and educational benefits for the awardees.
Impacts on the students range from heightened self-confidence and
interpersonal skills to enhanced scientific knowledge and interest
in career paths that may not have been previously considered. Most
importantly, the program demystifies science and reflects the role
of creativity and imagination in research.
The awards cover all travel and field
costs. In order to apply for the program, students must have been
nominated by a teacher. Gwyn Bush, science teacher at McNicholas,
nominated Cat and Amanda for the awards. “Earthwatch
wants students who combine creativity and science, something any
good scientist must be able to do. Science is a leap of faith in the
research process. Both Cat and Amanda have these qualities and these
experiences will be absolute highlights of their lives. No one has
ever come back saying anything other than this,”
said Gwyn.
