Student Council
Representatives from Archbishop McNicholas High School participated
in the 2nd Annual SAGA (Substance Abuse Greater Anderson)
on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Students from McNicholas, Anderson and
Turpin High Schools met to discuss drug and alcohol issues. The
main focus of this meeting was alcohol abuse and the myths regarding
use among teens. In small groups, students worked to develop ideas
for a television advertising campaign to help promote anti-alcohol
use. In a large group discussion, students were able to give their
perspectives on the use of alcohol in situations that they face
everyday.
Students met
with community leaders, police, youth pastors, and other
professionals from the Anderson community to discuss these issues.
“The more information we can give SAGA about real situations that we
face, the better chance they have of fixing the problem,” said
sophomore Katherine Wiesenhahn.
Students are
invited to continue to participate in monthly SAGA meetings as well
as other events that will be held throughout the year to help
students be pro-active against drug and alcohol use, as well as
provide safe choices of entertainment and lend support to one
another. Sophomores Luke Custer and Kyle Nash have been active
participants in SAGA since the first meeting held last year, and
Wiesenhahn hopes to be an active participant as well.

animals.

Kevin Semancik, Kevin Bauer, Kody McLaughlin, Lizzie Glaser, Emily
Glaser, Leah Forgus, Katherine Wiesenhahn, Lowell Krusling, and

McNicholas High School students bring in $7,700!
February 8, 2008
On Friday,
February 1, 2008, students at Archbishop McNicholas High School were
asked for their two cents. Every year, on the last day of Catholic
Schools Week, students conduct “Penny Day.” Students bring bags,
banks, socks, boxes and pockets full of pennies, and coins of all
kinds, to school. Typically, anywhere from 500,000 to 600,000 coins
find their way into religion teacher Sam Roflow’s classroom.

This year,
students collected over $7,700, which will be donated to St. Joseph
Elementary School in the West End. “For at least one entire day a
year, our school says that we are not the center of all things. That
is an important and very worthy Christian value,” said religion
teacher Sam Roflow, who has been coordinating Penny Day with the
Service Club for eight years.

John Morrell’s Pimp My Grill contest last fall. Although
McNicholas wasn’t picked as the winner, John Morrell wanted to
reward students and Pendergest for their hard work and outstanding
video. Tina Rudolph, of John Morrell & Co., presented McNick with
the donation.
Mr. Pendergest was excited to receive
the gifts from John Morrell. “This
is very generous of John Morrell. We will definitely put the grill
to good use and the gift of free John Morrell products for one year
is a great addition! On behalf of the McNicholas community, I would
like to thank John Morrell for this honor and also recognize Mrs.
Barb Gillming and our students who worked on this project. They did
a tremendous job and we are very proud of them.”

McNicholas earns
poetic achievement award
January 28, 2008
Creative
Communication awarded McNicholas High School with the Poetic
Achievement Award. Seventeen students were accepted for publication
in Creative Communication’s upcoming anthology, which qualified
McNicholas for the award. This honor is given to the top 10% of the
schools who entered the contest. The schools are chosen based on
the number of quality entries accepted.
Students accepted
for publication are Amy Ashworth – “Hostage to Her Own Humanity”,
Meghan Bush – “Painless”, Nate Christmann – “Light Up the Sky”,
Peggy Cook – “Predictability”, Michael Hain – “I Remember”, Evan
Hehemann – “Just for You”, Rachel Neltner – “My Paranoia”, Marie
Paquette – “A Boy That I Know”, Carly Pearce – “Feel Please”, Anna
Pieper – “A Winter’s Eve”, Joe Scheidenberger – “The Great White”,
Jessica Scheidler – “Seventeen”, Matthew Schlagheck – “My Mother”,
Sarah Shifflett – “Growing Up”, Kati Sinclair – “Judgment”, Aline
Tabet – “Why…”, and J.T. Weir – “Paradoxes”.
These students
have qualified to be considered for the “Top Ten Poet” award. The
poems are judged by poets, writers, and educators in elementary,
secondary, and higher education. Poems are selected on their
literary merit, creativity, or social significance.
Creative
Communication is an organization devoted to the promotion of
Language Arts and the writing, teaching and appreciation of poetry,
with the intention of motivating creative writers. The best poems
were invited to be published in Creative Communication’s anthology,
A
Celebration of Young Poets.
The philosophy is for the organization to be selective so that it is
an honor to be included, but not so exclusive that it is
discouraging to enter.
Publishing these
high merit poems from the contest creates a poetic record of the
fears, hopes, and dreams of today’s students.
On Monday,
January 21, 2008, fifteen McNicholas students and two teachers set
out to the 35th annual March for Life in Washington,
D.C. Students marched to honor the anniversary of the Supreme Court
case Roe vs. Wade, to protest the legalization of abortion in the
United States.
Students attended
a send off ceremony and prayer service at The Holy Spirit Center in
Norwood, officiated by Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk. After the
10-hour ride to Washington, D.C., students went to a youth rally and
Mass at the Verizon Center with approximately 20,000 teenagers, as
well as hundreds of priests, bishops, and seminarians. A message
from Pope Benedict XVI was read during Mass, which thanked March for
Life participants for "promoting respect for the dignity and
inalienable rights of every human being, including the smallest and
most defenseless members of our human community." After Mass, the
group attended the rally at Ellipse and began their march to the
Supreme Court Building. During the trip, the group stopped for a
visit with Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, a 1970 graduate of McNicholas
High School.
The following
students participated in the trip: sophomore Jenny Severyn; junior –
Jessica Wiles; and seniors – Michael Carlascio, Veronica Ferris,
Lindsay Greene, Jarred Kincaid, Lauren Kirry, Caitlin Klein, Jessica
McCall, Anna McCormick, Randy Reese, Emily Sandmann, Hannah
Schweickart, Kara Shropshire, and Liz Trotta. Teachers Paula Yerke
and Tracey Dietz traveled with the students.
Advanced
Placement Exam Orders
AP students need to order the appropriate exams
between now and February 1. Simply print the
AP
Exam Order Form, fill it out and return it to your AP teacher.
After February 1, see Mrs. Goines (room 11) with any questions or
concerns about AP exams. Note that all exams are ordered on one
form, so students will be turning the form into only one teacher,
even if they will be taking several exams.
The McNicholas
High School Service Club invites the community and all alumni to
participate in its service activities. During Catholic Schools
Week, McNicholas will host “Penny Day” on Friday, February 1,
2008.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community are
encouraged to bring in coins of all kinds, or other cash donations,
to support St. Joseph’s, a Catholic inner-city school. Last year,
“Penny Day” brought in over $8,000, which was donated to St.
Joseph’s and to the children of Sudan.
If you would like
to participate in this service opportunity, please bring donations
to the Main Office at McNicholas High School (6536 Beechmont Avenue,
Cincinnati, Ohio). If you have any question please contact Mr. Sam
Roflow, Community Service Coordinator, at
sroflow@mcnhs.org.

Archbishop McNicholas High School helped keep the
community warm this winter. The
McNicholas Service Club collected over 775 new and gently used
coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and scarves during its
annual warm clothing drive.
Students packed up their cars and delivered the warm

McNicholas Service Club has been participating in the warm clothing
drive for the past 8 years. Last year, the warm clothing drive
yielded over 600 items.
In addition, the Service Club
