2007-08 School Calendar The basic school calendar has been incorporated into the McNicholas online calendar for your reference.
Warrant Officer Five David Cooper, a 1978 Archbishop McNicholas High School alumnus, received a Silver Star for gallantry in combat in January, followed by the Valor Award from the American Legion Aviators’ Post 743 in New York.
Cooper was recognized with the Silver Star following a mission in which he was operating an AH-6 “Little Bird” helicopter against enemy forces during a raid. Cooper made successive assaults in support of the ground forces under enemy fire. His courage and gallantry under hostile fire directly contributed to the successful executions of this mission. If not for his actions, the ground forces would have sustained significant casualties.
The Valor Award recognizes a military aviator that performed a feat of courage or bravery. Valor Award recipients are chosen at the highest level of their respective service and approved by the office of the corresponding Chief of Staff. Cooper is recognized among Aviator’s Post Valor Award recipients, a select few that represent a proud tradition.
Cooper is in his 22nd year of Army Service and is a veteran of multiple deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism. He is the most decorated solider in the Army for 2006.
Cooper, a long-time helicopter pilot, currently serves in the 1st Battalion 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (SOAR) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. SOAR provides rotary-wing aviation support to special operations forces. Their mission is to organize, equip, train, resource and employ Army special operations aviation forces worldwide. Soldiers of the 160th have been actively engaged in the Global War on Terrorism since October 2001.

McNicholas High School honored by Hoxworth On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, Archbishop McNicholas High School was honored by the Hoxworth Blood Center at the 2007 High School Awards Banquet at the Newport Syndicate. McNicholas High School was awarded the Tom Roebel Award of Excellence. The Tom Roebel Award of Excellence was established last year to honor the memory of the late teacher and blood drive coordinator at Roger Bacon High School. The Award is now given annually to an outstanding high school whose commitment to blood drives exemplifies the spirit of service to the Tri-State community. This year, McNicholas was selected because of its dedication to the spirit of donating blood. McNicholas’ successful participation and organization of the drive also led to the award. The strong commitment to helping out at the blood drive by staff, administration, parents and other volunteers, were recognized by Hoxworth. McNicholas was commended for students being well informed, well behaved and mature about the "gift of life" that they were so generously donating. This annual banquet honors and recognizes the outstanding support area high schools give to Hoxworth's Community Blood Program. This year, 161 students, faculty and staff participated in the blood drive at McNicholas. The drive yielded 123 usable units, marking the most successful blood drive at McNicholas in the last 10 years. For each unit collected, three lives were saved. |

Archbishop McNicholas High School senior Lauren Davis, daughter of Lawrence and Joan of Forest Hills, was accepted into the 2007 Fallingwater High School Residency Program this summer near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Residency will take place at Fallingwater, one of the most famous homes that architect Frank Lloyd Wright built during his career.
Twelve students from throughout the country are selected each year to participate in this innovative, weeklong exploration of Wright’s masterwork, guided by a humanistic approach to architectural study. Davis is the only student in the state selected for this program. She will join students from Florida, Pennsylvania, California, Georgia and Michigan in an up-close, personal study and experience of Fallingwater. The Residency emphasizes architecture as a participatory art form that engages the body, mind and spirit.
The Residency will take place July 7 – 14, 2007. In the fall, Davis will attend the University of Kentucky, majoring in architecture.
The National Hispanic Honor Society, the International Club and many other students at Archbishop McNicholas High School participated in Children’s Day (El Día de los Niños), held at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday, April 28, 2007.
Mayor Mark Mallory welcomed the crowd to kick off the day. Guests were given passports that allowed them to travel through the Zoo and learned how to say hello in Amharic, Chinese, French, Greek, Kurundi, Spanish, Urdu and Wolof. As the guests entered different areas of the Zoo, native people from the countries in which the animals originated greeted them and talked to them about their cultures. “The animals at the Zoo vary greatly as do people from country to country, yet they all came together at the same place with the same goals,” said freshman Sam Tucci.
The event was held in conjunction with the English Language Learning Foundation, Inc., which helps English language learners become successful in their academic lives while fostering their cultural identity. “I never really comprehended how many different languages there are. The animals coming from different parts of the world symbolized how every nation in this world is special,” commented freshman Chloe Tippmann.

McNicholas student selected to participate in
Summer Science Institute
May 8, 2007
Archbishop McNicholas High School sophomore Claire Stegman, daughter of Gregory and Holly of Batavia, has been accepted to participate in the Summer Institute for Gifted Students at the College of Mt. St. Joseph this summer. Stegman will participate in the Crime Scene Analysis Through Forensic Science course July 9 – 27, 2007.
The Summer Institute for Gifted Students Program provides students with opportunities to explore exciting areas of mathematics, physics and computer science suitable to their levels of ability that are not generally offered at a high school level. Upon completion of the Institute, Stegman will receive three hours of college credit.
Two Archbishop McNicholas High School students rowed in the regatta in Oakridge, Tennessee, on April 28, 2007. Sophomore Claire Stegman, daughter of Gregory and Holly of Batavia, won a first place medal in her single’s race and sophomore Justin Chandler, son of Mark and Barbara of Bethel, received a third place medal in his single’s race. The Single’s race is a one-man boat and is considered one of the most difficult to row. Forty-one clubs from nine states, 24 cities and two countries participated in this regatta.
Stegman and Chandler are members of the Clermont High School Crew. Established in 2000, the Clermont Crew consists of students from high schools in the area including Batavia, Milford, Amelia, McNicholas, Glen Este, New Richmond and Bethel-Tate. This non-profit organization aims to develop the strength and character of these individuals through the discipline and teamwork of rowing. The Clermont Crew also provides a path to college and scholarships for dedicated young people.
Archbishop McNicholas High School junior David Loftus, son of Michael and Julie of Forest Hills, was selected to participate in the 2007 Howard Hughes Excellence in Science Education and Learning (ExSEL) program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine this summer.
Loftus is very excited about the opportunity. “I really wanted to be selected to participate in this program. It is a very good opportunity for me.”
The ExSEL program is an exciting opportunity for students to delve into the world of 21st Century basic science and research, including cell biology, molecular genetics, structural biology, immunology and neuroscience. ExSEL only accepted 25% of all students that applied this year. The program will take place June 11 through July 13, 2007.
More than 1.4 million juniors representing about 21,000 high schools entered the 2007 National Merit Program by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program applicants. All winners of the Merit Scholarship were chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skill and accomplishments.
McArtor was awarded the Ohio Leadership Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his high school and community. Out of a pool of 1,500 applicants, 600 were invited to apply for the award. An application, two essays and a teacher nomination letter were used to assess the nominee’s leadership characteristics and potential.
Eighty-five out of the 600 were selected as semi-finalists. McArtor was invited to Case Western Reserve University on March 20, 2007, for a 30 minute interview, luncheon and presentation. Only thirty students from across the state were awarded the Ohio Leadership Award. The Ohio Leadership Award had been in existence for 25 years.

McNicholas students donate computers
May 2, 2007
Archbishop McNicholas High School students participated in the Computer Recycling Event, through the Full Circle Group, hosted by Guardian Angels Church on Saturday, April 21, 2007.
McNicholas High School donated 10 old computers, 6 monitors, as well as other equipment. Each of these items contain lead, mercury and cadmium, all heavy metals, and if it is put into landfills or disposed of improperly can be very harmful to the environment. The Full Circle Group either disposes of the equipment properly or wipes it clean and puts new software on the computers so it can be donated to those in need.
McNicholas art students take home awards
May 2, 2007
Three Archbishop McNicholas High School students won awards at the 26th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Seniors Patrick Devereux and Justin Burwinkel received Honorable Mention accolades and senior Colleen Cheek took 3rd place. This year there were over 100 entries from the 2nd District with a total of 13 awards.
Every year, each member of Congress may host this competition and the first place winner’s artwork is displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the Capital building in Washington, D.C. The competition heightens art awareness by recognizing talented young artists from across the nation. Last year, senior Erin Overmann won the competition.
Archbishop
McNicholas High School math teacher Bill Losekamp has been
recognized as one of the outstanding math teachers in the Greater
Cincinnati area. The award is a result of a collaborative
partnership among presidents at Northern Kentucky University, the
University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. The collaboration,
known as “Conversations, Connections, Collaborations” (or C3) is
aimed at addressing issues that affect the Greater Cincinnati
community.
“Teaching can be very demanding, but even more rewarding,” commented Losekamp. “Not many professions have an opportunity to make such an impact on future generations. It is important for us to remember as teachers we are role models both in and out of the classroom. I feel honored and humbled to be recognized by the education community for that effort,” said Losekamp.
The 2007 Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teachers Awards Dinner will be held Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Kingsgate Conference Center at the University of Cincinnati.
