El Cid was one of the most famous Spanish knights and military leaders.  He lived in Spain during medieval times- the 11th Century. 

Burgos, Spain

His real name was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar.  He was an extremely brave and chivalrous Christian knight born of the Spanish nobility.

  He was named "el Cid" by the Moors which in Arabic is a title of respect which means "Lord".  And the Christians called him "Campeador" which in Spanish means "champion" or "challenger". 

There is an epic poem about el Cid which is called "Cantar de Mio Cid" ("The Song of the Cid").   

He fought many battles to save Spain from the Moors' (Muslim) control.  He is known for his reconquest of Valencia. 

El Cid is the national hero of Spain.  Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar or "El Cid Campeador" is one of the most revered men in Spanish history.
