The Dance Team was named National Champions in Varsity Jazz at the AmeriDance Heartland Nationals in Indianapolis. They also received 2nd in Pom and Captain Kayla Woods was the 3rd best Senior Solo.

The 2013-14 Rockettes Dance Team are the new Regional Champions in Pom. The team competed at the Showcase America Cincinnati Regionals held at Mt. Healthy High School. They earned 1st place in Pom and 3rd in Jazz. They also received a High Point Award for their Pom routine which means they had one of the four highest scoring routines of the day, regardless of team size or category. The team's next competition is at Ameridance Heartland Nationals on March 29 in Indianapolis.

The Men's Basketball Team fell to Wyoming 63-60 in the Div. II Sectional final on Saturday, March 1. The team ended their season with a 16-8 record.

The Women's Basketball Team finished their season on Friday, Feb. 28 when they lost to Kenton Ridge 63-41 in the Div. II District title game. The Rocket Women ended the season with 17-9 record and the Greater Catholic League Coed title.

  Rocket Bowlers advance to Districts; a first in McNick history


The McNicholas Men's Bowling Team, coached by Brian Combs, has advanced out of Sectionals to Districts for the first time in school history. The Rockets finished fifth out of 16 teams in the Division II Sectional Tournament at Colerain Bowl. Three different bowlers had 500 series to lead the Rockets: P.J. Verbryke (537), Matthew Massie (515) and Cameron Roesel (500). William Klunk had the team's high game of 215.


  Miller advances to State; Team finishes strong at Sectionals, Districts


At the District competition, sophomore swimmer Shelby Miller placed 20th overall in the 200 freestyle and 11th overall in the 500 freestyle in the state of Ohio qualifying her to compete and represent McNick proudly for a 2nd year in a row at the Ohio high school state championships in Canton.

During Sectional competition for the Swim Team, the women's 200 Medley Relay of Shelby Miller, Skye Lewis, Molly Jorden, and Karina Cabrera broke a school record with a time of 2:02.76 placing 10th overall and qualifying for Districts. The 400 Free Relay of Cabrera, Lewis, Jorden, and Miller broke the school record as well with time of 3:58.70 and placing 13th overall and advancing to Districts.

Sophomore Shelby Miller placed 17th overall in her 200 Free, advancing her to Districts. She also placed 9th overall in her 500 Free to qualify her to Districts as well. Molly Jorden placed 16th overall in the 100 Freestyle creating her pathway to the districts as a freshman. Ashley Dundon placed 22nd at the Mason site in her 200 IM and placed 24th at the Mason site in her 100 Fly. Emma Hughes dropped 3 seconds in her 100 back getting her best time of the season by swimming 1:22.83. Hannah Marshall maintained a solid performance in her 50 Free with a time of 41.30 and in her 100 free of 1:29.88. Adrian Ell dropped 1 second off her best time in the 100 breast to give a time of 1:23.87! She also swam a speedy 29.9 in her length of the 200 Free Relay. Skye Lewis had 2 of her best personal swims of the season in the 50 Free coming in at 27.07 and in her 100 Free at 59.35.Karina Cabrera gave a great performance in her 200 Free with a time of 2:23.15. She also had a personal best in her individual 50 Free with a time of 27.30. Kristen Rehl had a personal best swim dropping multiple seconds off her 200 Free time to come in at a 2:36.62. She swam a personal best length of the 200 Free Relay in 31!. Kristen finished her senior season in the 100 backstroke and improving her time to 1:34.20. Lillie Motz had a great performance by dropping 3 seconds in her 200 Free and clocking in a 2:27. She swam a personal fastest on the relay of a 29.1 in the 50 free. Lillie maintained a solid performace in the 100 Free clocking in with a 1:04. Senior Mitch Bloemer obtained personal records in both individual events, placing 18th at the Mason site in 50 Free with a personal best time of 27.69. He also swam his personal best in 100 backstroke dropping 4 seconds off his previous time clicking in at 1:15.73. Sophomore Rick Riede swam his personal best swims in his individuals as well placing 20th at Mason and swimming the 50 Free in 28.07. Riede also swam 100 free and dropped nearly 3 seconds to swim a 1:05.

The Women's Swim Team placed 10th overall out of 24 teams with 100 Points, and the Men's Swim Team also placed 10th overall with 27 points.

 

  Divers set records, qualify for State


In the Division II Southwest Ohio District diving meet at Miami University on Monday, Feb. 11, seniors Abby and Maddie Mitchell qualified to dive at the State Meet in Canton on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Abby finished 3rd with a score of 387.70 and Maddie finished 5th with a score of 382.35.

The girls were featured in a Cincinnati.com article titled "McNick twins head to state for diving."

Sophomore Salvatore Marino finished 10th, leaving him two spots short of a State appearance, but he ended his season well, breaking the boys 11 dive school record with a score of 246.65.

  Divers compete in Southwest Ohio Coaches Classic


Senior divers Abby and Maddie Mitchell and sophomore Sal Marino represented McNicholas well at the Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Classic this past weekend January 18-19th. On Saturday, they performed in the preliminary 6 dive meet at the Mason preliminary site; Maddie placed 4th, Abby 5th for the girls and Sal 9th for the boys. As with the swim portion of the Classic, divers perform at nine different preliminary locations and this year, 91 females and 89 male divers from both Division I and Division II high schools in the Southwest District were entered. The top twenty-five male and female divers qualify for finals and both Abby and Maddie easily earned finals spots to dive at the University of Cincinnati on Sunday morning, January 19th. Out of the twenty-five female divers at finals, five were eliminated after five dives, and then the field was further trimmed to sixteen at the completion of eight dives each. After all 11 dives in the finals competition Abby finished 14th and Maddie 15th. Great diving Abby and Maddie!


  Wrestlers compete in Catholic Invitational


During the weekend of Jan. 17-19, the McNicholas Wrestling Team attended the 53rd annual Catholic Invitational Tournament in Cleveland, OH. This tournament included 30 Catholic schools from all over the state of Ohio, both large and small divisions, including Moeller High School, Central Catholic, and St. Ignatius. Rocket wrestlers freshman Riley Dowell-Howko, sophomore Clayton Dause, junior Nick Keri and senior Ty Jabin all advanced to the third round of the tournament. Senior Zach Baca advanced to the fourth round of wrestling. Senior Adam Baca moved to the quarter finals of tournament action. The weekend culminated with senior wrestler Tyler Gumbert advancing to the finals and taking 5th place overall in the 182 pound weight class. As a team, the Rockets placed 10th overall in the small school division. The Rockets are coached by alumni and former wrestlers Craig Moore '88, Nick Derbyshire '07, and Rudy Schieldknecht '11. Congratulations to Tyler and the entire wrestling team!

 

  Dance Team competes at Ameridance


The Dance Team competed at the Ameridance competition at Mt. Notre Dame High School on Jan.18. The Rockettes received 5th in both Varsity Pom and Jazz, which were the largest (and most difficult) categories at the competition. Even better, they increased their scores from the previous weekend's competition!

Swimming

The swim team was at Wright State University against 3 other teams: Carroll High School, Lehman Catholic High School, and Indian Hill High School.  The girls' team placed 3rd and the boys' team placed 4th.   Shelby Miller placed 2nd overall in the 200 freestyle and 2nd overall in the 100 backstroke. Molly Jorden placed 3rd overall in the 200 free and 2nd overall in the 100 free. Lillie Motz placed 4th overall in the 50 free and 4th in the 500 free. Rick Riede had an amazing 50 free time and broke 30 seconds coming in with a 29.35 and placing 5th overall. Adrian Ell placed 3rd overall just behind her teammate in the 100 breaststroke.

Diving

McNicholas varsity divers competed in the Battle of the States Diving Competition at UC. There were over 30 schools and 100 divers. Seniors Maddie and Abby Mitchell both received medals placing in the top 12. Ohio outpointed Kentucky 183-127. McNicholas was the runner up in the team championship for school points. Sophomore Salvatore Marino placed 26th in the boys competition with a total score of 231.75.
