McNick science teachers earn
20th consecutive
Governor’s Award
September 19, 2008
For the 20th
consecutive year, The Ohio Academy of Science has selected all seven
of the Archbishop McNicholas High School science teachers as
recipients of the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Youth Science
Opportunities for the 2007-2008 school year. McNicholas is the only
non-public high school in Greater Cincinnati to receive this honor.
McNicholas’ award
winning science teachers are: Debbie Bonekamp, Gwyn Bush, Regina
Goines, Amy Morsch, Dick Pfirman, Michael Quinones, and Jon
Spurlock. “We go the extra mile beyond the course curricula. We
give students the chance to have amazing opportunities in science.
We are constantly watching professional resources for
symposiums, competitions, and field experiences. We use the
classroom to stimulate student interest in going the extra mile,”
said Bush, co-chair of the science department at McNicholas.
The McNicholas
teachers were among 209 instructors from 73 Ohio schools to earn
awards for their accomplishments during the 2007-2008 school year.
The Ohio Academy of Science initiated this educational partnership
program in cooperation with The Office of The Governor and the
Ohio Department of Education to recognize schools and teachers who
stimulate student scientific research and extend science education
opportunities beyond the traditional classroom activities.
“Receiving a
Governor’s Award for Excellence sends a clear signal that these
schools and teachers value student-originated, inquiry-based science
education as outlined in the Ohio Science Education Standards
and in the National Science Education Standards,” said Lynn
Elfner, the Academy’s CEO. “Whole new worlds of opportunities open
up to students when they complete research projects,” he continued.
