ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT
SCHOOL YEAR 2007-2008

Our 22nd
annual Science Fair was held on January 8, 2008. Sixty students
competed in Life and Physical Science categories. Awards were
given for the top three projects in each category. In Physical
Science, Jamie Zumach was 3rd, Anna Bloemer was 2nd,
and Megan Whitesell was 1st. In Life Science, Alex Nyktas and
Erin Sheehy tied for 2nd, and Katie Johnstone was 1st.
Governor’s Awards were earned by Jacob Boehm, Megan Whitesell, and
Jessica Tiettmeyer. Jacob Boehm received the National Association
of Biology Teachers’ Outstanding Biology Award.

McNicholas
was represented by 7 students at the University of Cincinnati’s
District Science Fair. Jessica Tiettmeyer, Connor Brumfield, Anna
Bloemer, and Jamie Zumach received excellent ratings. Megan
Whitesell received the Duke Energy Foundation Young Scientist
Award of $100.00 Katie Johnstone received the University of
Cincinnati’s Research Award of $100.00. Jacob Boehm received the
Southwest Ohio Center for Zoology Excellence Award of $150.00.
Ms. Amy Morsch accompanied these students and served as a judge
for the day. Mr. Dick Pfirman also judged.

Three
students represented McNicholas at the State Science Fair. Jacob
Boehm received a superior rating, and was awarded the Governor’s
Award in Agriculture and 1st place in Veterinarian
Medicine. Katie Johnston received a superior rating. Megan
Whitesel received two excellent ratings. Congratulations to these
students and their teachers, Ms. Amy Morsch and Ms. Debbie
Bonekamp. Mrs. Regina Goines judged the state fair.

Many
McNicholas students participated in other youth science
opportunities throughout the year.

Seniors
Michael Cox and Meagan Leach attended a seminar for students
interested in medicine at Children’s Hospital Medical Center on
March 13, 2008.

Junior
Claire Stegman received the Michelson-Morley Award given
by Case
Western Reserve for outstanding science achievement through the end
of her junior year.
-
Junior Dan
Rasfeld received the Bausch and Lomb Award given by the
University of Rochester for outstanding achievement in science
through the end of his junior year.
-
Junior Ian
Anderson received the University of Rochester award for
consistently high achievement in math and science throughout his
three years at McNicholas.

Junior
Amanda Brown was selected as one of 86 high school students from
across the country to participate in an Earthwatch Institute
summer research team studying bison in Idaho.
-
Junior Cat
Humphries was selected as one of 86 high school students from
across the country to participate in an Earthwatch Institute
summer research team studying the effects of sea level rising in
Virginia.

Junior
Claire Murphy was selected to participate in the Newport
Aquarium’s volunteer program for the summer of 2008.

Senior
Anne Schottlekotte participated in the Summer Science Institute
at Thomas More College focusing on the ecology of the Ohio
River.

Junior
Audrey McCabe participated in Mercy Hospital’s Nurse Camp.

Senior
James Braun earned a spot at a symposium held on May 10, 2008
for male nurses aimed at increasing the number of young men
entering this field. The focus of the day was “Men Making a
Difference in Nursing.”

Sophomores
Sam Tucci and Rachel Neltner received Honorable Mention in the
“Many Faces of Chemistry” contest sponsored by the Cincinnati
section of the American Chemical Society in the fall of 2007.

All
students enrolled in general science and chemistry and physics
took National Science League tests in April, 2008. The top
students received a medal and the next highest nine students
received certificates in each category.

AP Physics
students Tom Bachman, Alex Sears, Mike Lambert, Fritz
Schoolfield, Marilyn Vennemeyer, and Andy Woebkenberg competed
in JETS at the University of Cincinnati in February, 2008.

Four teams
of AP Biology students participated in the Toshiba Exploravision
competition. Amy Hollenkamp, Lainie Sanker, Claire Stegman, and
Stephanie Leyritz received Honorable Mention recognition.
o. Several
AP Biology and AP Physics students judged science fairs in our
feeder schools.

24 AP Biology students attended Sam Rhine’s Genetic Update
Conference
in October, 2007.

Seniors Justin Feldmann, Michael D’Netto, Ronni Ferris, and
Hannah
Schweikert partipated in the Christ Hospital Live
Surgery Event
on October 22, 2007.
r. The
Science Department inducted 21 seniors into the Science
National Honor Society in September, 2007. The guest speaker was Ms.
Angie Fieno, ’90, a protein chemist with Proctor and Gamble. The
inductees were Allie Bresler, Molly Bush, Jenni Cornelius, Michael
Cox, Michael D’Netto, Justin Feldmann, Ronni Ferris, Megan Ford,
Sorang Kang, Meagan Leach, Sora Lee, David Loftus, Katie Losekamp,
Rachel Quehl, Jenny Schleicher, Fred Schoolfield, Janna Schweikert,
Alex Sears, Christina Tepe, Marilyn Vennemeyer, and Andrew
Woebkenberg. These seniors assisted the science faculty on science
fair project presentation panels and judged the Science Fair in
January.

Our teaching faculty continued to participate in projects beyond the
classroom.
a.
The Science Department received the Governor’s Award for
Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities for the 19th consecutive
year.
b.
As the major accomplishment of the schoolwide “Catch the
Spirit, Go Green” theme of the 07-08 school year, the Science
Department officially opened the “land lab,” a reclaimed woodland
habitat made into an outdoor classroom for the entire school to use
on May 3, 2008. Tours through the habitat were conducted by
teachers and students from ten in the morning until five in the
evening. The department received valuable expertise and support
from Mr. Chris Tetrault, a McNicholas parent, and Ms. Katie Bollmer,
a civil engineer.

Ms. Amy Morsch brought back our Minds on Science summer camp
for grade school students after a one-year hiatus.
d.
Ms. Amy Morsch and Mr. Dick Pfirman served as judges for the
District Science Fair and Mrs. Regina Goines judged the State
Science Fair.
