Scope of the Language Courses
In the
elementary level of any language the focus is on familiarizing the
student, with some of the major elements basic to the target
language, such as verb tenses, grammatical structure and a
proliferation of vocabulary, in order to develop an elementary
ability to understand, speak, write and use a very simplified
language on everyday topics. During this time an effort is made
through use of discussion, authentic materials, videos etc. to show
certain similarities and differences in both the culture and the
language under study with that of the student's for the purpose of
fostering an open mind to the differences and sameness of all people
and to increase the knowledge and appreciation of one's own culture
and language. Use of computer technology is encouraged, especially
for reinforcing and practicing the concepts being studied.
In the
secondary level of language instruction a more in-depth study of
fundamental verbal and grammatical structure is stressed,
accompanied by an enriched vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on a
greater expertise and self confidence in the performance of the four
language skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and
writing. Increased comprehension and self-expression are evidenced
through the reading and discussion of simplified short
stories/dialogs. Continued cultural awareness is prompted through
simple literary works, discussion of everyday topics, certain
writing assignments and audio-visual materials and continued use of
computer technology for enrichment.
The
advanced levels of language concentrate on the attainment of a
facility of expression approximating that of everyday conversation
and a refinement of writing that would reflect the authentic
patterns of the language. At this level the student experiences a
more formal introduction to the literature of the people through
reading and the discussion of a variety of works in poetry, essay,
short stories, and theatre with a minimum recourse to English. An
ongoing reference to the culture of the people is realized through
the literature, everyday discussion of topical items, experiments in
foreign cuisine, arts and crafts, reading authentic newspapers and
magazines, and the use of films
and videos with emphasis on the reciprocal nature of the influences
existing between the two cultures and languages.
