Mathematics Goals...
Based on the
department philosophy, the courses offered by the Mathematics Department
will enable the student to:
ü
Promote math literacy – especially math proficiency in word problem
completion to:
o
improve SAT scores to at least the national average
o
successfully prepare all freshmen and sophomores for the March 2005 OGT
o
remediate all students who have not currently passed the Math section of
the State of Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test
ü
Promote mathematical thinking and the love of knowledge by:
o
initiating the first class of the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor
Society
o
providing more competitive opportunities for interested, talented
individuals and teams
ü
Integrate technological advancement into the current curriculum through:
o
calculator usage appropriate for each class and grade level
o
appropriate utilization of InterWrite boards within the classroom
o
utilization of CDs, websites, and textbook Internet functions as they
become available
ü
Promote team teaching both within the Math Department and with other
discipline areas by:
o
continuing the “Lead Teacher” method of coordinating course content
o
using
curriculum mapping and investigating cross-curriculum opportunities
ü
Investigate current curriculum and potential course offerings, such as:
o
“Mastery Algebra” concept for Algebra 1
o
Consumer Math and Proficiency Remediation opportunities
o
a
combination Discrete Math / Statistics course – taught by a single
instructor for students interested in engineering or other
science-oriented fields
o
an AP
Statistics course
ü
Elevate McNicholas’ academic reputation within the community – thereby
improving recruiting and retention figures
