Summer Reading
2008
Plant the Seed, Read!
We continue this
year's reading week theme, Plant the Seed, Read, as we present the
summer reading requirements for 2008. The Summer Reading Program is
designed to maintain reading skills during the summer and to foster
a life-long interest in reading. All students, including incoming
freshmen, are required to participate in the program. Three
academic departments, English, social studies, and religion,
selected this year's works.
Every student
(except Senior AP English) is required to read the two books listed
for his/her grade level. Freshmen will be tested on Sleeping
Freshmen Never Lie and also must complete the required project
for The Gospel According to Larry (Click
here for project details). All other students will be tested
on both books on Friday, August 22, 2008, in the appropriate
classroom. To assist with comprehension and recollection of
specific details, students are strongly encouraged to take notes as
they read. It may be helpful to keep a chapter-by-chapter reading
log that records important characters, settings, events, quotes,
unfamiliar vocabulary, and personal reactions. Books read for this
year’s summer reading program will be alluded to throughout the
school year in classroom discussions and composition work. Remember
to read actively!
The books selected
for the summer reading program are obtainable from area public
libraries and books stores; a reading list has been sent to many
local bookstores who have agreed to supply the necessary quantities
to accommodate our students. You might also want to research
on-line book stores for possible discounted prices. Any questions,
feel free to contact Mrs. Valerie Combs at
vcombs@mcnhs.org .
Have a great
summer and an enjoyable reading experience.
